In international ecommerce, not getting it right before setting the price is the main cause of returns and complaints over unexpected charges at destination.

How does tariff optimisation translate into real savings?

Accepted Answer

Three levers: reclassifying correctly when today you are applying a suboptimal TARIC code, applying preferential agreements that were not in use despite eligibility, and reclaiming overpaid duties from the last three years via amendment. In first-time audits, it is common to identify 5 % to 15 % of yearly duty spend as recoverable or optimisable.

When does a special customs regime make sense for an SME?

Accepted Answer

When the operation pattern justifies it: you import and hold stock for months (customs warehousing), process and re-export (inward processing), send abroad for processing and receive back (outward processing), or manage recurring returns (returned goods). The practical test: if the financial cost of duties and VAT frozen for weeks outweighs documentary complexity, there is a case.

Do I need REX or Approved Exporter status to sell abroad with tariff preference?

It depends on the agreement. CETA (Canada), EPA Japan, Vietnam and others use REX, an automatic registry. Classic EU agreements (EUR.1) accept Approved Exporter to avoid issuing certificates per shipment. Below the small-value threshold, neither is needed; above it, yes. We assess it per destination market.

I import small volumes of steel. Do I have to file CBAM?

CBAM applies by CN code, not by volume. If your product is listed (iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity or hydrogen), you file even at small volumes. Per-shipment thresholds exist and are worth confirming case by case — but do not assume you are out of scope just because volumes are low.

Due diligence: identify the in-scope product, collect supplier information (geolocated origin, declarations, traceability), assess deforestation risk and issue your own statement. No. The taxable base is the non-recycled plastic content of the packaging. Correctly documenting the recycled-plastic share through supplier certification is the main lever to avoid overpaying — and the first source of mistakes we see in historical reviews.
